A Holter monitor is a machine that continuously records the heart's rhythms for 24 hours normal activity.

Holter monitor uses electrodes placed on your chest to record your heart rhythm to a small recording monitor. You carry the Holter monitor in a pocket or small pouch worn around your neck or waist for 24 hours. The monitor is battery operated so you MUST NOT wet it at any time.

While you wear the monitor you will be asked to keep a diary of activities and any symptoms you may experience. It is very important that you accurately record your symptoms and activities so the doctor can match them with your Holter monitor findings

The Holter monitor may be used to diagnose abnormal heart rhythms and symptoms such as:

•Atrial fibrillation

•Multifocal atrial tachycardia

•Reasons for fainting

•Slow heart rate (bradycardia)

•Ventricular tachycardia
