The preoperative consultation and evaluation is an important interaction between the patient and the physician which allows the surgeon to carefully assess the medical condition and determine risk factors against the procedure in order to educate the patient. All patients, but patients with heart disease in particular, need to have a pre-operative evaluation that can guide the anesthesiologist as to the most proper form of anesthesia to deliver during a procedure and can advise the surgeon as to the risk stratification of a patient for the surgical procedure. A thorough assessment ensures that the patient's chronic diseases are under appropriate medical therapy prior to a procedure and guides treatment during the post-surgical period.
